"You did what?" I practically yelled into the phone.

Kylie's voice was calm. "I said they could search the place," she repeated. "I don't have anything to hide. Anyway, it sounded like if I said no, he'd eventually get a warrant. I figured if I complied quickly, that would look best."

Apparently, Kylie hadn't considered that her sister had recently been dating a drug dealer...which meant she could be hiding all kinds of things in that cloistered bedroom of hers.

"Are you sure about this? What did Chelsea say?" I asked.

"I didn't ask her. She's coming back from work in about five minutes, so when she gets here, we'll come over."

I could only imagine the kind of blowup that was about to go down at the Baer household, but I didn't want to borrow trouble. Hopefully, Chelsea was just as clean as Kylie assumed she was.

"Okay, no problem. Just come on up to the door and knock," I said. "You know how Coal is with the doorbell."

"I'm looking forward to seeing him again," Kylie said.

As we said goodbye, I peeled off my other glove and scratched Coal's head. His heavy tail thumped into my ankle. "Well, it looks like we'll be having company soon." I grabbed the trowel. "Let's head in and make sure your feline friend hasn't destroyed the place, shall we?"

As I returned things to the garden shed, I hoped Kylie's house would be the only thing to get flipped upside down today...and not her entire life.
